We have committed ourselves to remain a downtown church, serving in the community God placed us in over 120 years ago. Our heart is to be a servant church. Those who become a part of our community of faith are challenged to take seriously their discipleship by continuing to grow in faith and devotion to Jesus Christ. Within these pages are many opportunities to grow in our love of God and for one another.
If you are one to ask: "What can I do for the Church of Jesus Christ?" before you ask: "What can the Church of Jesus Christ do for me?" then this may be the church for you. Our church is an amazing, loving, intergenerational community focused on serving instead of being served. It is in our giving that we receive God's blessings. Our benefits are a by-product of being a beneficial part of the church. So First Church is not primarily an institution with benefits, but an institution that is beneficial to the community and the world. Christ has called us to go and to give, not sit and receive.
As Francis of Assisi prayed in the 13th Century so do we pray today:
Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

John's JournalWe worked on this to be part of our logo about three and half years ago. After reflections from Church leaders and staff, we went with this motto/slogan, not only because many folks view this church that way, but also because we want to work to be more that way. Of course part of the problem is that folks have different ideas about being "loving." And there are folks, believe it or not who do not see us as a loving place. They may be right, because it is a high standard put before us. Something has happened to them, the church's fault or not, that has caused them to feel less than loving toward their church and feel that their church is less than loving toward them. It can happen when we fail to minister to someone effectively who has been ill or troubled. It can happen when you just don't remember someone's name or you forget to acknowledge someone who is near you. No one likes to be ignored and that is why we need to keep our eyes open and use our peripheral vision to be aware of who is around us and who needs our attention. Yet we are still not as lovingly aware as God is.
We are making plans to visit our sister church in Gibara, Cuba later this year. There will be an informational meeting to discuss plans and answer questions regarding this trip on Thursday, May 22 at 7:00 pm in the Life Enrichment Center, (LEC). The travel dates are set for November 29 - December 6.
If you are sensing God's call to participate as part of a team or get involved in other ways with this mission opportunity, or just want to know more about what's happening with the Methodist church in Cuba, please plan to attend this meeting. This years team membership needs to be finalized by the end of June. If you are unable to attend and would like more information about what our church is doing in Cuba please contact Ralph or Diana Masker.
